God's mission of reconciliation

Long before mission statements, and missionaries and their missions, the word mission had a different, simpler meaning (as a friend recently pointed out): mission was what God did in God's self. God the Father sent the Son into the world, and the Son sent the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit in turn sent the church. Mission comes from sent, and mission was a word denoting the actions of God in God's self.

We are recovering that understanding today. Pentectost is about that. It reminds us that the church is sent. It is not static. It does not belong to itself; it is not its own mission. It is sent. I t participates with God. We join God in God's mission in the world as God works and lives in our world. Out of our role in God's mission that we are called to realize in our baptism, our community comes about.

Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it,and gave it: and this last action is key. He gave his body. As his disciples we are challenged to do the same: to give our bodies to God's mission in the world. Last night as the community conneciton initiative gathered, we began to develop ways to do this: ways that we may all do hands on service to people in need--service without strings attached, but just out of the unconditional love of God. This is not for our sake, but to join God in his work of reconciliation in our world.
