Developing Capable People

The parish offers a parenting course called Developing Capable People. This course is used to train educators, youth services workers, counselors, psychologists, juvenile court workers, foster parents — anyone who is in a position to influence child and youth development.

The program was developed by H. Stephen Glenn, an internationally recognized family psychologist, and Jane Nelsen, a licensed marriage, family and child therapist. The first class meeting will be on January 6, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Guild Room and will meet for 10 weeks.

The course teaches the "Significant Seven" perceptions and skills that people (children) must acquire in order to live productive, successful lives. These are:

  1. Strong perceptions of personal capabilities.
    "I am capable."
  2. Strong perceptions of significance in primary relationships.
"I contribute in meaningful ways and I am genuinely needed."
  3. Strong perceptions of personal influence over life.
"I can influence what happens to me."
  4. Strong intra-personal skills.
The ability to understand personal emotions, to use that understanding to develop selfdiscipline and self-control and to learn from experiences.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills.
The ability to work with others and develop friendships through communicating, cooperating, negotiating, sharing, empathizing and listening.
  6. Strong systemic skills.
The ability to respond to limits and consequences of everyday life with responsibility, adaptability, flexibility and integrity.
  7. Strong judgmental skills.
The ability to use wisdom and to evaluate situations according to appropriate values.

There are a number of people in our parish who have taken this course and have found it to be very helpful. The course material not only teaches skills for raising children but also life skills which individuals may find useful in their business and personal relationships.

The first class meeting will be on Sunday, January 6, from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Guild Room and will meet for ten weeks, finishing up on March 9. The course materials cost $40 per person or $50 per couple. (Scholarships are available.) We encourage both parents to attend this course, although it is not required. Babysitting will be available and is free.

Preregistration is required, so that materials can be ordered. Contact Joanna Shreve at joanna@sttims.org if you have questions.
