Joanna Shreve Finance Administrator
I am filling a dual role at St. Timothy's as Lay Ministry Coordinator
and Finance Administrator. I came to the Episcopal Church in a roundabout
way. I was born in England at the end of World War 2 where my parents
were brought up in the Church of England. Soon after my birth, they
immigrated to upstate New York and I grew up attending Quaker meeting
and Sunday School. In my college years I returned to my roots and attended
the Royal College of Music for three years. During this time, I regularly
attended many different Anglican churches. Following my graduation from
the RCM, I came out to Stanford University for graduate studies and
it was there that I met my husband, Bill. Almost as soon as we started
dating, we started attending the Episcopal Church together where he
was teaching Sunday School.
We found our way to St. Timothy's in January of 1980, by way of the Nursery
School. My older daughter, Barbara, had just graduated from the school
and was in kindergarten. My younger daughter, Julia, was just starting
out in the three-year-old class. We were seeking a way to counteract
the very materialistic and egocentric attitudes that were so prevalent
in the culture in which we lived. Over the past twenty years I have
been active at various times in the Sunday School, Youth Ministry, choir,
the Altar Guild and helped in the library. In 1985, my husband and I
agreed to take on the job of treasurer, which we shared for five years.
When Bill needed to step down from the job, I continued as assistant
treasurer. In 1997, I left my full time job in the Cupertino Union School
District to join the staff of here as Finance Administrator.
In January 2000, the rector asked me to take on the job of Lay Ministry
Coordinator to help support the work of the parishioners in our parish.
I have also sponsored a fall Ministry Fair and have taught a 10-week
parenting course called Developing Capable People. We have quarterly
Newcomers' brunches and a mini-course for newcomers which includes information
about the mission of the parish. The emphasis is on helping newcomers
discover their spiritual gifts and finding a place in our community.
For the past four years, I have been more active at the Diocesan level of
our church. The Diocese of El Camino Real is made up of 48 churches
on California's central coast, from Palo Alto all the way down to Morro
Bay. I have been a Diocesan Delegate to the West Valley Deanery and
the Diocesan Convention. In 1998, I was elected to the Diocesan Commission
on Congregational Vitalization and became its chair a year later. In
January 2000, I was elected to the Council of the Diocese of El Camino
Real and more recently named to the Diocesan Strategic Planning Commission.
I also serve on the Board of Santa Maria Urban Ministry as one of the
representatives from our parish.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you learn more about the St.
Timothy's community and our many diverse opportunities for fellowship
and servant hood.
